Romans wrote numbers with letters. Each letter is worth a fixed amount, and you mostly just add them up left to right.
XII is X(10) + I(1) + I(1) = 12. The one twist: when a smaller letter sits BEFORE a bigger one, you subtract it — IV is 5 − 1 = 4, and IX is 10 − 1 = 9.
